Apr98 Status Report:
APBioNet-APAN advanced networking project
------------------------------------------

1. Network Connectivity Status
------------------------------

It is about a month since the APBioNet-APAN collaborative
advanced networking project was endorsed at APEC,
and work initiated to provide international advanced
connectivity between major bioinformatics nodes in
AP region.

Since then, we have been mobilising an international team
to get the network linkage to be set up.
For details, please check out:
http://www-sg.apbionet.org/APBIONET/apbionet-projects.html

The attached status report below is from the RASC to whom we are
most grateful for the efficient way in which they have
gone about getting the linkup done.

2. APBioNet Applications and Database/Computational Resources
-------------------------------------------------------
We can safely start our plans to initiate collaborative projects
over this network infrastructure that will link DDBJ, GenomeNet,
HGC, NCC, ANGIS, MAFFIN agricultural genomic databases and
IRRI rice genome databases and BIC computational resources
and another other nodes who wish to participate and contribute
resources for sharing and collaboration.

Akira Mizushima of MAFFIN has also initiated a close cooperation
with us to start a Wild Fire network. Moreover,
we will soon be in a position to discuss a "World Wide Genomic Database
Mirroring Program", and the suggestion by Professor Sugawara
(NIG) of setting up a virtual Global Genome Informatics Facility (G-GIF)

Conclusion
----------
Progress in the APBioNet advanced networking project
has been rapid due to strong
collaborative efforts by all concerned, especially those
involved in networking within APAN who worked well in
collaboration with colleagues from APBioNet nodes.

Report by Tan Tin Wee, 23 April 1998.
